Hay Fever Help: Simple Ways to Feel Better

The weather in Newcastle has been dry and warm lately. While that’s great for getting outside, it also means pollen levels are high. If you’ve been sneezing or have itchy eyes, hay fever could be the reason.

What Is Hay Fever?

Hay fever is an allergy to pollen – a powder that comes from plants. You’re most likely to get symptoms in spring and summer, especially when it’s sunny or windy.

You might notice:

  •  Sneezing
  •  A runny or blocked nose
  •  Itchy, red, or watery eyes
  •  An itchy throat or ears
  •  Headaches
  •  Feeling tired
  • Easy Ways to Feel Better

Here are some simple tips to help reduce hay fever symptoms:

  •  Check the pollen forecast each day. Stay indoors when levels are high, especially in the morning and evening.
  • Keep windows and doors closed as much as possible.
  •  Shower and change clothes when you come in from outside.
  •  Dry clothes indoors so they don’t collect pollen outside.
  •  Wear sunglasses and a hat to keep pollen away from your eyes and face.
  •  Put a bit of petroleum jelly around your nostrils to trap pollen.
  •  Dust with a damp cloth and vacuum often.
  •  Avoid mowing the lawn or garden during high pollen days.

Low-Cost Tips That Work

You don’t need to spend a lot to get relief. These ideas can help:

  •  Choose supermarket-brand antihistamines. They work the same but cost less.
  •  Use hay fever wipes to clean pollen from your face and hands.
  •  Drink herbal teas or hot lemon water to help soothe your throat.
  •  Cut down on alcohol. Drinks like beer and wine can make symptoms worse.
  •  Wipe down pets with a damp cloth if they’ve been outside – pollen can stick to their fur.

Get Better Sleep with Hay Fever

Hay fever can affect your sleep. These tips can help:

  •  Keep pets out of the bedroom.
  •  Wash your bedding every week.
  •  Vacuum your mattress and bed frame.
  •  Keep windows closed at night.

Pop Into Your Local Pharmacy

Your local Pharmacy can help with hay fever. You don’t need an appointment. They can suggest tablets, nasal sprays, or eye drops. You don’t need to see a GP first, and Pharmacies might be open when GP practices aren’t’.

Read more about everything the Pharmacy First scheme offers, and find your nearest Pharmacist by clicking the button below.

If your symptoms get worse, or don’t improve with Pharmacy treatment, speak to a GP. You might need stronger treatment or a referral for allergy care.

You’re Not Alone

Hay fever can be frustrating, but small changes can help you feel better. Make a plan, look after yourself, and ask for help if you need it.
